NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has directed private schools here in the Capital to give an undertaking that they would implement the free-ship scheme for students belonging to the economically weaker sections of society if they want to avail themselves of the Court's earlier order reducing the ceiling from 20 per cent to 15 per cent.
Seats
Passing the direction, a Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice Tirath Singh Thakur and Justice S. N. Aggarwal said if the schools failed to give the undertaking within six weeks they would have to earmark 20 per cent of their total seats for these students. The Court had fixed the 15 per cent ceiling on Tuesday. The free-ship scheme is in lieu of grant of land by the Delhi Development Authority for the school buildings at below market prices. The Court further said that the scheme would be applicable to minorities' schools and Air Force schools as well. The directions came on a petition by the Action Committee of Recognised Unaided Schools challenging the Delhi Government's notification making the condition a statutory obligation for all private schools that were granted land at a concession.
Plots allotted
The Delhi Government has allotted plots to schools in different parts of the city on the condition that they will provide free education to students who hail from the economically lower strata of society. At present there are 381such schools.
