BBMP to relocate 250 shops

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will relocate the 250 shops situated on the major storm water drain on Broadway Road in Shivajinagar in the next 10 days to take up remodelling of the drain.

Shifting of traders

According to a press release, the traders would be shifted temporarily on the available BBMP land near the Old Police Station in Shivajinagar. These traders would be given identity cards and shifted back to the old location after widening the drain and remodelling it.

Drain clogged

During the recent rains, this drain had clogged and sewage overflowed causing inconvenience to the traders and the residents of nearby areas.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who had inspected the area, had directed the BBMP officials to clear the drain of silt and remodel it.

The civic body will also issue identity cards to residents of the housing quarters for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in Koramangala from Thursday. This is to identify the genuine allottees of the 512 flats of EWS quarters, which is in a dilapidated condition.

Owing to the substandard construction work, several blocks of quarters had collapsed and the remaining were in a precarious condition.

Identity cards

Health and Family Welfare Minister R. Ashok would distribute the identity cards on Thursday. The residents would be shifted to temporary sheds on the available BBMP land in the area. Work on building 500 temporary sheds has started, the release said.

BBMP Commissioner K. Jairaj has requested residents to obtain identity cards and shift to the temporary accommodation till the complex was re-constructed, the release added.
