Ingenious smuggling attempt foiled

Staff Reporter

Motorcycles were dismantled to evade customs duty

CHENNAI: An ingenious attempt to import high-value motorcycles in dismantled condition, labelling them as spare parts to evade customs duty has been foiled.

A release from the DRI said a Bangalore-based person dismantled the two-wheelers and sent them as spare parts to various destinations by using Import Export Codes of different companies.

When a motorcycle is imported one has to pay a Customs duty of 120 per cent, whereas for spare parts it is only 25 per cent.

The authorities seized four such consignments of parts of Suzuki, Yamaha and Honda high power race motorcycles.

The consignments were valued at over Rs 25 lakh.
