BJP Minority Morcha to hold rallies

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Shahnawaz Hussain, Lok Sabha MP and president of the Bharatiya Janata Party's Minority Morcha, wants to use his new position to end Muslim alienation from the party.

He knows that it's a tall order but the view that he expressed at the office-bearers' meeting of the Morcha here on Thursday is that the party should send out a political message that unlike the United Progressive Alliance the BJP wants to take concrete steps for the welfare of minorities in general and Muslims in particular.

Mr. Hussain said that from June 25 to 30 the Morcha units in all the States would organise public rallies "to show that the BJP does have a large number of Muslims as members and to protest against the lip service being paid to Muslims by the UPA."

He said the BJP wanted better education for the minorities and job opportunities, but reservation was not the answer as it was not even feasible given that the Constitution prohibited reservation on grounds of religion.

The Morcha's national executive committee meeting would be held here on July 7 and 8.

After that members would be asked to fan out into State capitals to help implement the decisions.
