Bids called for Perambur abattoir modernisation

Kannal Achuthan

Chennai : Six years after its announcement, the Perambur abattoir modernisation project may finally get started.

The Chennai Corporation has invited bids from national and international firms for a design-build-operate-transfer contract to modernise the slaughterhouse. The facility is used to slaughter about 1,000 goats and 250 cattle every day.

Residents have been unhappy about the project's delay as solid waste and waste water generated from the abattoir polluted the locality. Untreated water is let into the Otteri canal, said residents.

Delay in modernisation was caused by various factors ranging from withdrawal of a Central Government grant to a legal case involving one of the bidders for the project. A bidder was chosen for the project in 2005 but the tender was cancelled on grounds that financial requirements were not met.

Capacity to be increased

Mayor M. Subramanian recently said that the abattoir would be modernised in the lines of the Villivakkam abattoir. The Perambur slaughterhouse's capacity would also be increased. Bidders will be expected to submit technical solutions for waste treatment.

The firm that wins the bid will be expected to operate and maintain the facility for a certain period.

The company can retain revenue earned from the slaughter charges during this period. The Corporation will take over the abattoir after the concession period.

Once a hygienic environment has been set up, animal meat by-products can be sold to other companies for use as bone meal, sutures, collagen sheets, bone charcoal, insulin, sport guts and gelatine to earn more revenue.
