Over 2,600 paramilitary forces sent to Gujarat

In the wake of continued Gujjar violence in the State

NEW DELHI: The Union Home Ministry on Thursday carried out a detailed review of the situation in Rajasthan in the wake of continued Gujjar violence in different parts of the State.

After a detailed discussion with senior officials of the Ministry, Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta held a video-conference with the State Chief Secretary and the Director-General of Police.

At the high-level meeting, where the Directors-General of the Border Security Force (BSF), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) were present, Mr. Gupta reviewed the availability of paramilitary forces in the State.

Special Secretary (Internal Security) Mahendra Kumawat was present.

"The Home Secretary asked the State authorities to make the most effective and optimum use of the Central forces,'' a spokesman of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said here. Over 2,600 personnel of the paramilitary forces have been rushed to the State to assist the State police.

Sources said that since railway lines and buildings had become the target of the violent Gujjars, the RPF chief was asked to beef up security to protect all railway property.
