Lovely congratulated for better results

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Cabinet on Thursday lauded the role played by Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely and the Education Department in ensuring a 30 per cent increase in the pass percentage of children in the Class X and XII examinations over the past two years. The Cabinet also congratulated the students and teachers of all Government schools in Delhi and parents of the students on their remarkable success in the Central Board of Secondary Education examinations this year, which have shown a remarkable increase in the pass percentage.

Two hurt in mishap

NEW DELHI: Two persons sustained minor injuries in a pile-up at Mandawali here on Thursday.

According to the police, a DTC bus coming from Hapur in UP rammed into an auto-rickshaw near Hasanpur Depot after its brakes failed. The accident triggered a series of collisions involving several cars, motorcycles and cycles. A motorcyclist Arun Kumar (38) and a milkman Mukesh (34) sustained minor injuries in the mishap and were taken to a nearby hospital. No case has been registered.

`Cheat' arrested

NEW DELHI: A 47-year-old man wanted in several cases of cheating and forgery has been arrested by the Delhi police.

Acting on a tip-off, Gurpreet Singh was arrested at Gurgaon on Tuesday. According to the police, Gurpreet is wanted in a Rs.19 lakh cheating case being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation, while the Mumabi Directorate of Revenue Intelligence is investigating his role in a forgery and cheating case involving Rs. 1 crore, the police said. He was first arrested at Indira Gandhi International Airport here in 1988 while allegedly smuggling gold biscuits into India.

Held for cheating

NEW DELHI: Five persons have been arrested by the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi police for allegedly cheating banks of Rs. 60 lakh by using forged property documents.

According to the police, the accused -- Sanjay, Radhey, Ashok, Mange Ram and Deepak -- used to prepare bogus title documents of vacant property and mortgage the same to avail themselves of big credit limit from bank. They would impersonate as owner of the property and sign loan documents as guarantor in the bank. The accused are allegedly involved in several other criminal cases registered with the CBI and the Delhi police.

Auto-thieves nabbed

NEW DELHI: Five persons have been arrested by the Special Staff of the South-West Delhi police at Bijwasan here for alleged involvement in several cases of auto-theft.

Acting on a tip-off, a trap was laid and a car was intercepted. However, the car's occupants tried to escape and allegedly opened fire at the police team. The police claimed they fired in retaliation and arrested them. The accused have been identified as Amit, Ravish, Rakesh, Parveen and Vinod.
