COIMBATORE: Farm units, corporate bodies and others who are interested in getting organic certification for their farms can register now at Coimbatore itself. A release from the Directorate of Organic Certification, Coimbatore, said that it had started its operations in the city as a result of the State Government's decision to introduce this as a new scheme for the agriculture department in the State Budget of 2007-08. The release further said that there was an increased demand for organic foods as they were healthy, non-toxic and possessed longer shelf life. Organic farming became inevitable to save the environment, soil fertility and also ensure healthy living. The registration fee for farmers or farmer units would be Rs. 5,000, while for corporate bodies it would be Rs. 25,000. Those interested can apply for registration in triplicate to the Directorate with the prescribed fees at the following address: Directorate of Organic Certification and Directorate of Seed Certification, 1424 A, Thadagam Road, GCT Post, Coimbatore 641013. For details call 0422-22432984.
