More doctors quit Escorts hospital

Staff Reporter

Trehan visits Apollo Hospitals

  • Escorts confirms `exodus'
  • Says movement will not affect set-up

NEW DELHI: More than a dozen doctors and 60 support staff, including nurses, paramedics and administrative personnel, of the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre resigned on Friday following cardiologist Naresh Trehan's decision to join the Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals.

Confirming the "exodus," the hospital management said a few senior doctors were leaving the institution that had a staff strength of 250 physicians and 2,500 support staff. "This movement will not adversely affect the hospital set-up or working in any manner and we do not foresee any problems," said an official.

Dr. Trehan was removed from Escorts hospital on May 18 to enable him to "concentrate" on his Medicity project but was reinstated on May 26 as part of an out-of-court settlement.

He resigned as the Institute's executive director on May 30.

Following this, the hospital management on Thursday confirmed receiving the resignation of 12 doctors, including Director of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Yatin Mehta and Head of the Community Out Reach Programme R.R. Kasliwal.

Dr. Trehan and his team visited Apollo Hospitals on Friday to "look at the facility and iron out any minor details before starting work."

Dr. Kasliwal said: "We are going to see the facility so that we can start work from Monday. Our team consisting of doctors, nurses, administrative personnel and technicians will move to Apollo Hospitals.

Though I am leaving Escorts hospital, this is an institution that I have worked for and it has been a very emotional journey. Today, the hospital is comparable to any world-class hospital and it is not an overnight development. The resignations have happened because we are moving as a team with Dr. Trehan."
