MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada district police, in a pre-dawn operation on Friday, busted a "hawala" operation and arrested two persons who were travelling by a private bus to Mangalore from Bangalore at Subramanya Cross on National Highway 48 in Uppinangady police station limits. The police recovered Rs. 39.22 lakh in cash from them and also seized three mobile phones. Puttur sub-division Assistant Superintendent of Police Harsha P.S. told The Hindu over telephone that he received "credible information" about two persons carrying a large sum of cash from Bangalore to here. Police checkpoints were set up at several places, particularly to check buses coming from Bangalore. Around 4 a.m., the police arrested the two from a private bus. While all passengers in the bus were able to prove their bonafides and had valid tickets, he said the accused, Abdulla Kunhi and Mohammad Shafi, both aged 45 and residents of Melparambu in Kasargod taluk, had no convincing answers to questions from the people. Dr. Harsha said the money was sewn in a cloth and wrapped around in a professional manner. Most of the currency notes recovered were Rs. 500 denomination. The police have registered a case under sections 41 (1) (d) and 102 of Criminal Procedure Code at Uppinangady police station and produced the accused before the jurisdictional court at Puttur.
