Toddy shops not to be auctioned this year too
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD:
Toddy shops in the State will not be auctioned this year too but offered to tappers' co-operative societies on nominal rents as last year.
As such, the present rents will continue for this year too -- Rs 25 per tree in the rural areas and Rs 50 in the urban areas.
A decision to this effect was taken by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy at a meeting held here on Friday to review various welfare schemes being implemented for toddy-tappers in the State.
"Welfare of tappers, and not revenue earning from them, is the concern of the Government", he observed.
Officials told him that the existing toddy policy, pursued for the past three years, had ensured substantial growth of income to tappers.
Rent payable on trees had come down to Rs.14.03 crore now from Rs. 54.67 crore in 2003-04.
At the same time, ex-gratia allowed to the affected families in the event of a tapper's death in a fall, had been doubled.
