Open schools to be more learner-friendly

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Government proposes to revamp the open school system by bringing under one umbrella all the related centres across the State.

The aim of the exercise is to change the syllabus to enable easy understanding of subjects under non-formal education system, bring in more SCs, STs and BCs who have been staying away and introduce vocational courses.

This was stated by Minister for Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and Open Schools M. Hanumantha Rao at a press conference here on Friday on the sidelines of a workshop on `Review and revamp of the system to make it more learner-friendly.'

He said the proposals would be taken up with Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy so that the Government could take an early decision.

The centres to be brought under one umbrella included 380 Bapuji Vignana Kendras, he said, adding that the Government was thinking of appointing a special officer to head such umbrella organisation.

Another proposal was to introduce SSC this year as part of the system and extend in future to the study of Intermediate, as done by some States.

The Minister proposed that certificate courses could be introduced for the benefit of students under the open school system so that they could secure jobs like electrician, plumber, mechanic and sustain their livelihood.

Mr. Rao said based on the suggestions made at the workshop the budget of Rs.4 crore for the open school system would be raised as also new subjects introduced.

There were 1,501 open school centres in the State for the benefit of 44,907 students every year. Since the last 16 years, 833,335 candidates were enrolled and 399,903 completed the courses.
