PALAKKAD: A three-member expert medical team headed by a community medicine specialist at Thrissur Medical College will visit Peruvembu grama panchayat on Saturday to study the cases of anthrax found in human and animals in the area. The team consists of a physician and a microbiologist, District Medical Officer (DMO) A.K. Radhakrishnan said. He said two anthrax cases among humans were detected in Peruvembu panchayat recently Kannan, 45, of Varikkad Vettil, and Thankamani, 60, of Mavakkad Veetil in Peruvembu. They were admitted with symptoms of anthrax to Thrissur Medical College Hospital. The hospital authorities later confirmed that they were affected by anthrax. It is suspected that both got the disease from a cow that had died of anthrax in Peruvembu. Kannan had cremated one of the three cows that had died of anthrax and Thankamani resides in the area where the cow had died. The detection of anthrax in human beings has raised alarm among the medical authorities. A large number of cattle are brought to the State from Tamil Nadu.
