News Analysis
The heading of a box item (June 1, 2007) was: "Over 2,600 paramilitary forces sent to Gujarat". It should have been "Over 2,600 paramilitary forces sent to Rajasthan". The text was about an official review of the situation in Rajasthan in the wake of continued violence by Gujjars. A sentence in "Mayawati's appointment as Chief Minster unconstitutional: PIL" (June 1, 2007) was: "The petitioner said Article 164 (1) permitted a non-legislator to become the Prime Minister, Chief Minister or Minister in case he or she undertook to contest an election and become legislator within six months." It should have been Article 164 (4). Article 164 (4) which is similar to Article 75 (5) which relates to the Union Executive, permits a non-legislator to become Minister for six months. Article 164 (1) says that the Chief Minister shall be appointed by the Governor, and other ministers shall be appointed by the Governor on the advice of the Chief Minister. The third paragraph in a report "Water level dipping in LBP [Lower Bhavani Project] reservoir" (Coimbatore, May 30, 2007, page 5) was: "The water level in the dam on Tuesday is 74.12 tmc feet as against the full level of 105 tmc feet ... in the corresponding period last year the storage was 20.2 tmc feet with 95 tmc feet of water." A reader points out that there is a mix-up in units. Depth is a linear measure and is to be expressed in feet, while volume is expressed in tmc (thousand million cubic feet). The paragraph should have been "The water level in the dam on Tuesday is 74.12 feet as against the full level of 105 feet ... in the corresponding period last year the storage was 20.2 tmc feet with 95 feet of water." In "Comment When more is less" ("Sport", June 1, 2007), it was stated that India plays four Tests in England in a forthcoming tour. It should have been three Tests. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
