Chidambaram to open Bangalore Bio

Bangalore: Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram will inaugurate the 7th edition of Bangalore Bio on June 7. The event, which will go on till June 9, will take place at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre on Tumkur Road.

Those participating in conferences held along with Bangalore Bio include Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, the British High Commissioner to India, Sir Michael Arthur, technology experts from overseas and Kiram Mazumdar-Shaw, who heads the Karnataka Vision Group on Biotechnology.

The year, 700 delegates from industry and academia and policymakers are expected to participate. — Special Correspondent

28 more degree colleges planned

Bangalore: To cope with the increasing demand by students for admission to degree courses in arts and science, the State Government has started 104 new degree colleges this year and will set up 28 others soon, Higher Education Minister D.H. Shankaramurthy said here on Friday.

The Minister told presspersons that 1,600 teachers would be recruited through the Karnataka Public Service Commission. — Staff Reporter

Calling young writers

Bangalore: The Kannada Book Authority has invited manuscripts under a programme to promote budding writers. Authors should be aged below 35. The work should not have been published or selected by the Authority earlier. Manuscripts should be neatly handwritten, or typed, and the original should be retained by the writer. The work could be a story, poem, novel, play, critique, essay or article. Entries should be sent to the Administrator, Kannada Book Authority, Kannada Bhavan, J.C. Kalam to interact with students

HASSAN: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will interact with 500 students from the 1st standard to the pre-university level at the Kala Mandir here during his visit on June 8.

Deputy Commissioner K.H. Aswathanarayana Gowda said the President would arrive at 11.30 a.m. and go directly to the ISRO Master Control Facility to dedicate INSAT 4-B to the nation.

At 3.15 p.m., Dr. Kalam will arrive at the Kala Mandir where he will interact with the students. — Staff Correspondent

Workshop on teaching English

Bangalore: The Regional Institute of English, Bangalore, and the American Centre have organised a one-day workshop on "Teaching Young Learners", on June 12. It will be conducted by Mary Lon McCloskey, Director of Teacher Education and Curriculum Development for Educo in Atlanta, U.S. The workshop will focus on the principles of teaching English to young learners and oral language development for young learners in English. Power shutdown in Alur, Sakleshpur

HASSAN: There will be no power supply between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. in Alur and Sakleshpur taluks for 15 days. Executive Engineer of the Chamundeswari Electricity Supply Corporation has in a press release here on Friday said that work on a 40-km length of a 66 kVA line between Hassan and Sakleshpur is in progress. It had to be completed within 15 days. Hence, there would be no power supply in Sakleshpur and Alur taluks between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on odd days and between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on even days for the next 15 days. The official appealed to the people to cooperate with the corporation.

Agitation threat

BIJAPUR: Bijapur district unit of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat on Friday threatened to launch an agitation if the Government failed to withdraw the introduction of English from first standard in schools. A delegation comprising district unit president B.M. Patil; secretary M.G. Yadwad; and honorary secretary V.C. Nagathan; met Deputy Commissioner V.B. Patil and submitted a memorandum. The letter addressed to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said the decision would prove detrimental to the interests of Kannada. Hence, there was a need to continue the earlier language policy with regard to primary education. — Staff Correspondent

15 hurt in accident

Raichur: As many as 15 passengers were injured, three of them seriously, when a North East Karnataka Road Transport Corporation bus overturned and fell into a ditch on the State Highway near Kallur village in Manvi taluk on Thursday. — Staff Correspondent

12 arrested

RAICHUR: The Raichur police arrested 10 persons from Kalmangi village and two others from Turvihal village on the charge of gambling and recovered Rs. 3,000 stake money from them in Sindhanur taluk on Thursday. They have been remanded in judicial custody. — Staff Correspondent

Man ends life

RAICHUR: Hussainappa (50) reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself to death from a tree at a field in the limits of Kannari village of Sindhanur taluk on Thursday. The Sindhanur Rural police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent
