Kannada Sahitya Parishat terms decision `unscientific and unreasonable'

SHIMOGA: Members of the Shimoga district unit of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat staged a demonstration here on Friday as part of the State-wide protest against the teaching of English in government Kannada medium primary schools.

A memorandum presented by the president of the district unit of the parishat D. Manjunath to Deputy Commissioner T.K. Anilkumar said that the Government's decision on the issue was unscientific and unreasonable and that it should be withdrawn.

Panel sought

It urged the Government to constitute a committee comprising academics, subject experts and psychiatrists to go into the matter and make suggestions.

It wondered that when the children in the primary schools were finding it difficult to learn even Kannada, how could they learn English at such a tender age.

The memorandum warned against taking any hasty decision in the matter and asked the Government to implement the resolution adopted unanimously on this issue at the 73rd Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelana held in Shimoga last year.
