Police force to get houses, vehicles and equipment

Prakash asks officers to start working on proposals


  • Rs. 45 crore sanctioned for new station buildings
  • Rs. 180 crore allocated for building houses for policemen

    Bangalore: Law and Home Minister M.P. Prakash on Friday said several proposals had been made to strengthen the Police Department, Fire and Emergency Services and Home Guards. He said these included building houses for the personnel, providing new vehicles and latest equipment.

    Speaking to presspersons after a review meeting of different wings of his department, the Minister said the top officers were asked to report within a week on the action taken on the measures suggested during the discussion.

    He would follow up on each issue with the department concerned, once he got the feedback from them.

    Mr. Prakash said tenders had been invited for constructing police station buildings and Rs. 45 crore had been sanctioned for it.

    He said Rs. 5.8 crore had been released for improving traffic signals and other works in seven districts.

    He said Rs. 1.8 crore would be spent in Mysore, Rs. 1.2 crore in Hubli-Dharwad, Rs. 60 lakh each in Belgaum and Gulbarga and Rs. 50 lakh in Mangalore.

    5,000 houses

    Mr. Prakash said that 5,000 houses would be built across the State for police personnel at a cost of Rs. 180 crore.

    It would be entrusted to the Karnataka Police Housing Corporation. There was a proposal to increase the allocation for renovating the Police Commissioner's office building in Bangalore to Rs. 18.19 crore from Rs.7.5 crore. The remaining amount was yet to be sanctioned.

    The B-Trac project for solving the traffic problems in the city would be completed by October 20 this year.

    Of the 43 fire service stations, 28 had been commissioned and work on the remaining 15 was yet to be started.

    A proposal had been sent to give one more set of uniform to the Fire and Emergency Services personnel.

    Sites for policemen

    The Government would propose to allot sites for police stations and Fire Force stations and other buildings on the lands recovered from the encroachers in Bangalore Urban District and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike jurisdictions.

    50 vehicles

    The Home Guards would get 50 vehicles at a cost of Rs. 4 crore and the funds had been released.

    The Director of Prosecutions would get computers and furniture at a cost of Rs. 2.15 crore.

    The police personnel have demanded enhancement of washing allowance to Rs. 500 from Rs. 25.

    The Police Department had been asked to look into the cases of officers facing departmental enquiry for two to five years delaying their promotions.

    Some of the other recommendations made to the Government were raising the quantum of funds for giving cash awards to the personnel to Rs. 5 lakh at the Deputy Commissioner level and Rs. 25,000 at the Superintendent of Police level, the medical reimbursement and providing vehicles and completing the process of filling 50 posts of sub-inspectors to work in wireless units.
