More forces rushed to Rajasthan

Special Correspondent

Centre in constant touch with State Government

NEW DELHI: Concerned over escalating violence in different parts of Rajasthan, where the Gujjars are on the warpath demanding Scheduled Tribe status, the Union Home Ministry on Friday rushed two more companies of paramilitary forces and kept additional companies ready.

Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta was in constant touch with the Chief Secretary in Jaipur with whom he had a number of telephonic conversations on Friday. Special Secretary (Internal Security) Mahendra Kumawat spoke to the State police chief. Home Ministry sources said the situation was ``serious'' and clashes between Meenas and Gujjars added another worrisome dimension to it.

The Home Ministry has so far despatched 27 companies of Central paramilitary forces to help restore law and order in areas, where violence has been on the rise over the past few days. Five additional companies from neighbouring States have been kept ready.
