PONNANI: Two writers of Ponnani, Alankode Leelakrishnan and C. Ashraf, have voiced their protest against the Government move suspending the eviction of encroachers on the Bharathapuzha riverbank. In a statement, Mr. Leelakrishnan and Mr. Ashraf said the eviction was the most intrepid move the State had witnessed after the land reforms and the education Bill. They praised the attempts to salvage the encroached portions of the Bharathapuzha bank, popularly called the cradle of Malayalam culture. They condemned the attempts to scuttle the eviction of four large-scale encroachments on the riverbank. A multi-storeyed building under construction on the riverbank at Kottathara, near here, had collapsed in July last year, resulting in the death of four labourers. The writers said the authorities were being pressured to protect the four encroachers. They said it was a shame that the Government that dared to evict the Tatas from Munnar had faltered before the encroachers of Ponnani. They demanded that the land recovered be handed over to the Forest Department or the Social Forestry Department.
