6 independent candidates file papers

MADURAI: Six independent candidates filed their nomination papers on Friday from the Madurai West Assembly constituency, where the by-poll is slated for June 26.

According to election officials, K.P. Padmarajan of Mettur, K.P. Raja of Chennai, S. Dhinakaran, M. Selvam, P. Senthil Kumar and Syed Talib Alisa of Madurai filed the nomination papers before the Returning Officer, A. Narayanamurthy. Though Mr. Raja claimed that he was the Congress nominee, there was no official letter from the party confirming his candidature. The filing of nominations commenced on Friday. — Special Correspondent

AIADMK to boycott cooperative elections

CHENNAI: General secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Jayalalithaa on Friday said her party would boycott the coming cooperative elections in the State as they would not benefit the people.

In a statement here, she said the State Government had decided to conduct the polls on the basis of the previous rolls, which were challenged by the AIADMK.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government had withdrawn the case pending before the Supreme Court, she pointed out.

Referring to the announcement of the Minister for Cooperation in the recent budget session of the Assembly that the cooperative election process would commence from June 8, she said the DMK Government's move only showed that it was not interested in conducting the elections in a democratic manner. — Special Correspondent

Uneasy calm at Kuzuthurai

Nagercoil: Uneasy calm prevailed at Kuzuthurai municipality after the councillors clashed among themselves on Thursday.

According to police sources, chairman of the municipality Asai Thampi (DMK) sustained injuries after he was attacked by members belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxists).

Government has allotted Rs. 1.05 crore for the setting up of a filter point at Kuzuthurai to provide potable water to the residents of the municipal limit.

A dispute between two groups of councillors over the implementation of the development programme had led to the unruly incident.

Mr. Asai Thampi was admitted to a private hospital.

Worker killed in accident

Udhagamandalam: A tea factory worker was killed in an accident near here on Thursday.

The incident occurred when Sangeeetha's hair got entangled in a machine. While being taken to a hospital with grievous injuries, she died.

A case has been registered by the police. — Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Chennai Central-Jaipur Express (2967) scheduled to leave Chennai Central at 5.30 pm on June 3 is rescheduled to leave Chennai Central at 11 pm on the same day due to late running of its pairing train, according to a Southern Railway press release. — Special Correspondent

9 child labourers rescued

ERODE: The Labour Welfare department personnel rescued nine child labourers here on Wednesday and registered cases against the institutions that deployed them.

Labour inspector C. Thangavel in a release on Thursday said that on the instruction from labour commissioner A. Sugumaran, the officials raided hotels, automobile workshops, business establishments and even in houses and rescued nine child workers. - Staff Reporter

Two killed

SALEM: Two persons were killed and one sustained injuries in two different accidents in the district on Thursday. Police said Prabakaran (24) of Edaipadi was killed on the spot when a lorry dashed against his motorcycle near Taramangalam. His friend Submani (25), who rode the pillion, sustained serious injuries and was admitted to a hospital. In another accident at Vazhapadi, Unnamalai (58) of Thukkiyampalayam was fatally knocked by motorcycle. Police registered a case.

Woman dies

SALEM: A woman was killed on the spot and three persons sustained injuries in a collision involving a car and a lorry in Theevattipatti near here on Friday. Police said Rajasekaran, sub inspector attached to the Sankagiri police station, his wife Prema (32) and family members were travelling in two cars, when one of them dashed against a lorry. His wife died on the spot. Three persons sustained injuries and were admitted to a private hospital. A case was registered.

AIADMK councillor arrested

TUTICORIN: The police have arrested three persons, including an AIADMK councillor for allegedly preventing Government officials from discharging their duties.

When the Municipal Corporation Council meeting was held recently, AIADMK members alleged that effluents let out into a stream from an industrial house had caused the death of some goats. They also staged a protest on the premises of the Municipality.

Based on a complaint from the Commissioner, Lakshmi, the police arrested AIADMK councillor Suresh Kumar and party functionaries Singam and Sathya Ganaraj.

Water released

Nagercoil: The Collector-in-charge, B. Jothi Nirmala, released water from Pechipparai dam for irrigation purpose on Friday.

Under the Kodayar-Pattinamkal irrigation system, water from Pechipparai, Perunchani, Chittar I and Chittar II will be released from June 1 for farming activities in the district.

Fine imposed

TIRUNELVELI: Two-wheeler riders who dared to defy the Government Order on wearing helmets were fined at several places on Friday.

Many, including some women, paid the amount, even as the police ignored some of their own colleagues zooming past without headgears.

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 74.25 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Friday.

The inflow was 886 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 1,000 cusecs. — Special Correspondent
