6 independent candidates file papers
According to election officials, K.P. Padmarajan of Mettur, K.P. Raja of Chennai, S. Dhinakaran, M. Selvam, P. Senthil Kumar and Syed Talib Alisa of Madurai filed the nomination papers before the Returning Officer, A. Narayanamurthy. Though Mr. Raja claimed that he was the Congress nominee, there was no official letter from the party confirming his candidature. The filing of nominations commenced on Friday. Special Correspondent
AIADMK to boycott cooperative elections
In a statement here, she said the State Government had decided to conduct the polls on the basis of the previous rolls, which were challenged by the AIADMK. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government had withdrawn the case pending before the Supreme Court, she pointed out. Referring to the announcement of the Minister for Cooperation in the recent budget session of the Assembly that the cooperative election process would commence from June 8, she said the DMK Government's move only showed that it was not interested in conducting the elections in a democratic manner. Uneasy calm at Kuzuthurai
According to police sources, chairman of the municipality Asai Thampi (DMK) sustained injuries after he was attacked by members belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxists). Government has allotted Rs. 1.05 crore for the setting up of a filter point at Kuzuthurai to provide potable water to the residents of the municipal limit. A dispute between two groups of councillors over the implementation of the development programme had led to the unruly incident. Mr. Asai Thampi was admitted to a private hospital. Worker killed in accident
The incident occurred when Sangeeetha's hair got entangled in a machine. While being taken to a hospital with grievous injuries, she died. A case has been registered by the police. Special Correspondent

AIADMK councillor arrested
When the Municipal Corporation Council meeting was held recently, AIADMK members alleged that effluents let out into a stream from an industrial house had caused the death of some goats. They also staged a protest on the premises of the Municipality. Based on a complaint from the Commissioner, Lakshmi, the police arrested AIADMK councillor Suresh Kumar and party functionaries Singam and Sathya Ganaraj.
Water released
Under the Kodayar-Pattinamkal irrigation system, water from Pechipparai, Perunchani, Chittar I and Chittar II will be released from June 1 for farming activities in the district.
