BANGALORE: M.R. Poovamma, the long-limbed Dakshin Kanara girl, ran a beautifully judged one-lap event to stop the clock at 54.7 seconds at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Friday afternoon.

But Poovamma, Karnataka's torch-bearer in the ongoing Unitech fourth Youth National Athletics Championship, will be denied acknowledgement of a record on the 400m event because neither the KAA nor the AFI was able to procure the electronic gadgets (electronic timer and photo-finish, which was promised) for the meet on time.

Her timing on Friday was way ahead of Pinki Pramanik's mark of 54.92 set in 2003 and Sabina Khatun's time of 56.59 for the meet record. The dapper student of coach Dinesh Kunder however was elated. "I'm confident of doing well at the World championship too," she said.

Manpreet Kaur, the 17-year old from Punjab, heaved the four-kilogram iron ball to a distance of 14.35m, which was marginally short of her own National youth record bettering effort in the Senior Federation Cup at Kolkata, recently.
