NEW DELHI: An acid test awaits the Indian boxers at the Asian championship next week, ahead of the all-important World championship, an Olympic qualifying event. An 11-member team will leave for the Mongolian capital, Ulan Bator, on Saturday for the June 4 to 10 Asian championship.
After returning from Mongolia, there will be a few training-cum-competition tours before the World championship in Chicago, from October 17 to November 1. The Chicago championship will offer the most berths for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. There will be 80 places on offer in Chicago, making it the easy route to qualify. A quarterfinal finish at the World championship will ensure a berth in the Olympics for all weight categories except heavyweight and super-heavyweight where the boxers reaching the semifinals get the ticket to Beijing. The team: Amandeep (48kg), Jitender Kumar (51kg), Akhil Kumar (54kg), Diwakar Prasad (57kg), T.T. Singh (60kg), Manoj Kumar (64kg), Dilbagh Singh (69kg), Vijender (75kg), Dinesh (81kg), Manpreet Singh (91kg), Ajay Kumar (Plus 91kg). Coach: Raj Kumar. Principal Correspondent
