Culture Minister reviews progress of ongoing projects

BHUBANESWAR : While Rabindra Mandap, the cultural hub of the capital city, will have a major face-lift by the onset of the next festival season in the State, the silk city of Berhampur will soon have an auditorium equipped with the state-of-the-art facilities for hosting cultural events.

These were some of the major discussions that came up in the high-level committee meeting of the department of culture here this week. Culture Minister Surya Narayan Patro, who reviewed the progress of all the ongoing major development projects in presence of culture secretary Gopinath Mohanty and representatives of about 14 institutions functioning under the department, directed for completion of all expansion activities by mid-July.

The department is keen to complete the projects during this summer break so that academic activities do not get disturbed on the campus, he explained. Development of the new campus of Utkal University of Culture and hostel of the State-owned Odissi Research Centre tops the list of priorities, the officer stated.

New gallery

Orissa State Museum in a bid to make the museum campus more attractive to the visitors, will build an aquarium and a water body. Besides a new gallery will come up for showcasing the rare art and crafts of different districts of the State while the existing gallery on tribal art and culture will be expanded. Renovation of cultural complex against an expense of Rs.3-crore, the Rabindra Madap auditorium will have sophisticated acoustics system, light arrangements and air conditioning of the lobby besides renovation of the green rooms, revealed the officials. The work will be on soon on a war footing to keep it ready for public use latest by October, they assured.
