MUMBAI: Tata group Chairman Ratan Tata on Friday asked the private sector to focus on social development of the country.

"While we grow we must not forget the fact that there are numerous people living below the poverty line, especially in rural areas,'' Mr. Tata said at a function organised by the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry at its annual general meeting here.

The chamber also felicitated Mr. Tata for his contribution to industry.

"Both public and private sectors have a great deal to look forward to. But they also have a great deal of responsibility towards the society at large,'' he said.

Mr. Tata said the corporate planning should embody responsibility besides laying down a path for profit maximisation.

At the meeting, Ranjit Shahani, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Novartis India, has been elected President and Rajiv Lall, Managing Director and CEO of IDFC, Vice President of the chamber for 2007-08. — PTI
