KASARAGOD: As much as 35 per cent of the supply by the Kerala Water Authority through pipes is being lost because of leakage and pilferage, Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran has said. He was speaking at a function at the Balal panchayat here to dedicate 388 rainwater-storing tanks, which were constructed by the panchayat as part of the Swajaldhara Rural Drinking Water Project. Mr. Premachandran conceded that drinking water projects being executed by KWA were causing huge expenses. Because of the above factors, the Government was giving priority to the construction of rainwater tanks. The Minister said the Government would consider the interests of the district while implementing the second stage of drinking water projects as per Jalanidhi scheme. The Union Government would bear 75 per cent of the cost of the projects. Ten per cent would be borne by the local bodies and beneficiaries would bear 15 per cent. Earlier, talking to journalists he said the Government would not implement the Munnam Kadavu reservoir project across Chandragiri river dismissing concerns of the locals that it would flood large tracts of land.
