VENTING IRE: A demonstration against collection of toll at railway overbridges held in the city on Friday
KOZHIKODE: The collection of toll at railway overbridges in the city was temporarily called off on Friday morning following protests from major political parties and their youth organisations. The Roads and Bridges Corporation had announced that toll collection would begin on Friday at the overbridges at Vengali, Chengottukavu, Vengalam and Meenchanda. The announcement had triggered protests. Various organisations had warned on Thursday they would resist the move. Following this, the police was deployed at Vengali and Meenchanda on Friday. Supporters of the Congress, DYFI and BJP gathered at Vengali and Meenchanda by 8 a.m. on Friday to block toll collection. The employees authorised to collect the fee were turned away by DYFI workers. The toll booth was also damaged in the melee at Vengali. The demonstration at Vengali was led by DYFI local leaders P.M. Mohammed Riaz, E. Sunil Kumar and K. Ratheesh. The BJP, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), CPI(M) and the Congress held similar demonstrations at Meechanda. City Police Commissioner Balram Kumar Upadhaya assured the demonstrators that their demand would be discussed with the authorities of Roads and Bridges Corporation. Until then, toll would not be collected. BJP State vice-president V.Muraleedharan sought the intervention of Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan to stop toll collection at the railway overbridge. He said the move to levy fee on vehicles using the bridge was uncalled for, as the expenditure for the overbridges was met by Railways and the State Government.
