Steps to improve farm sector mooted

Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE : The State committee of the Agricultural Assistants' Association Kerala has urged to restructure the Agriculture Department with a view to providing maximum benefits to farmers.

A set of measures that touched upon various aspects of farming was suggested to uplift the sector.

A system should be evolved to convert the present mono-cropping practice in household holdings to multi-crop system so that the cost of production could be brought down whereby improving productivity.

The association wanted adequate steps to ensure that the knowledge percolated to the grassroots level. The benefits of research carried out by the department should reach the farmers.

The Central-State funds should be provided to the districts based on the efficacy of agricultural projects and the need of each individual district. Duplication of project implementation by different agencies should be avoided.

The urgent need to conserve the remaining cole lands was stressed by the association. Land use rules in this regard should be made strict so that there was no further conversion of paddy fields for other purposes and reclamation was prohibited.
