HYDERABAD: A large number of landless poor participated in the land occupation campaign launched by Bharatiya Kisan Mazdoor Union on Friday across the State. CPI Secretary K. Narayana, Farm Workers Union president Siddi Venkateswarulu, CPI Ranga Reddy district secretary S. Balamallesh led the agitation in Medipally village in Ghatkesar mandal in Ranga Reddy district. The agitators pitched tents on 10 acres of Government land in survey number 48. Reports reaching here said CPI activists and poor people occupied Government lands in nine places in Khammam district. More than 3,000 people joined the movement in Yelerupadu, Reddygudem, Kamepalli, Garladoddi, Kothagudem and Garimellapalem villages, according to the CPI state committee member G. Veeraiah. In West Godavari, MLA Jalli Wilson and others occupied 1,650 acre of Government and forestlands. In Guntur city, 500 CPI workers are arrested when they tried to pitch tents on six acres of land for house sites. In Hakanpalli village in Bellampalli mandal of Adilabad district, 703 acres land was occupied. The CPI floor leader in Assembly, Chada Venkat Reddy and others staged a dharna in Elkathurthy mandal demanding house sites. In Narsampet division of Warangal district, 1,586 acres of forestland was occupied. Reports said in Nellore and Srikakulam districts, more than 1,000 acres was occupied.
