CHENNAI: Motorised two wheeler riders and pillion riders wearing helmets far outnumbered those without the protective headgear on city roads on Friday, as Chennai joined five other cities in the State to take the lead in enforcing the compulsory helmet rule under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Both Transport Commissioner C.P. Singh and Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Kumar said more than 90 per cent of the motorists complied with the rule. "The next three days, we will be issuing a warning. But enforcement of fines is just round the corner," Mr. Sunil Kumar said.

Seat belts

The rule pertaining to the compulsory use of seat belts for front seat car passengers also came to effect Friday. It applies to all cars manufactured after 1994.
