NEW DELHI: A large number of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha workers led by Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan and Delhi BJYM president Anil Sharma were on Friday arrested by the police while staging a demonstration demanding dismissal of advocate R. K. Anand from the Congress in the wake of the NDTV expose in the BMW hit-and-run case.

The demonstrators had gathered at the BJP national headquarters at 11 Ashok Road in the morning. Addressing them, Dr. Vardhan said though the Congress has been raising slogans that its "hand" was always with the common man, its conduct ran contrary to the words.

Dr. Vardhan said the manner in which Mr. Anand had been shown in the sting operation had exposed the real face of the party. "This case proves that the Congress always works to save and support the rich. It has nothing to do with the interests of the common man," he said, expressing surprise over the silence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the issue.

Mr. Sharma charged that the country and the judicial system were not safe in the hands of the Congress. He demanded that the Bar Council membership of Mr. Anand be cancelled immediately and he be dismissed from the party.

Following the address by the party leaders, the BJYM workers tried to march toward the Congress headquarters on Akbar Road but were intercepted and arrested by the police.
