Sheila urges Gujjars to maintain peace

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Criticising the firing on peaceful demonstrators in Rajasthan, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday exhorted the Gujjar community to maintain peace, calm and amity.

Ms. Dikshit, who has met a number of delegations of Gujjar community during the past few days, also expressed concern over the recent happenings in Rajasthan.

"The firing was unwarranted as demonstrators were raising their demands in a democratic way. The firing has resulted in continued violence which is very worrying," she said.

The Chief Minister assured the delegations that Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil was fully aware of the situation and was in constant touch with Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje.

Ms. Dikshit suggested that members of the Gujjar community continue the process of dialogue so that an amicable solution was found. On Thursday, the Delhi Cabinet had also expressed its deep sense of regret over the incident and observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to the victims.
