Six militants killed

This is the first major strike by militants in the Valley this year

Srinagar: Six militants and two security men were killed and 24 injured as militants blew up an Army bus with an IED and attacked a convoy in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Friday.

Nineteen Army jawans were injured in the IED explosion in Rajbagh area of the city. The 20-kg device, planted by the roadside along the banks of the Jhelum near a missionary school, targeted the convoy, on its way from Haft Chinar to Badami Bagh cantonment.

The Hizb-ul-Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the blast, the first major strike by militants in the Valley this year. The powerful blast smashed windowpanes of several buildings including the school, prompting authorities to close the institution for two days.

In the second incident, two militants, an Army jawan and a policeman were killed and five, including four cops, injured near the Police Training School in Baramulla. Heavily-armed militants opened fire on an Army convoy passing through Sheeri, 65 km from here, triggering a shootout with the security men on Friday afternoon.

In the initial firing, one policeman was killed and four others were injured, a defence spokesman said. In the ensuing gunfight, both militants were killed. An Army jawan was killed in the exchange of fire while another jawan sustained injuries. The Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Taiba has claimed responsibility for the attack.

In the third incident, two suspected Al-Badr militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Khrew area of Pulwama district on Thursday night. — PTI
