BHUBANESWAR: Senor IPS officer B.B. Mahanti rejoined duty on Friday, 10 hours after a team of the Rajasthan police, which came to arrest him, left Orissa. Mahanti was accused of helping his son, a rape convict, jump parole. During the five days of stay in the State, the Rajasthan police conducted searches in hospitals and Mahanti's residence. But their effort had gone in vain.
Bail plea
According to sources, the hearing for his bail plea at a Rajasthan court was adjourned by a day. The team from Rajasthan, which openly claimed to have been armed by court directives to arrest Mahanti, reached Orissa on Monday. But the Director-General of Police (Home guard and Fire Service) went on casual leave on medical grounds till May 31. When the Rajasthan police waited till Thursday, the DGP extended his leave by one day. On Friday morning, Mahanti attended a meeting in his office in Cuttack, Home Department sources said. The four-member team boarded train around midnight on Thursday. Mahanti's son Bitihotra was convicted for raping a German scholar and lodged in Rajasthan jail before he jumped parole.
