TIRUCHI: The helmet rule that came into effect from Friday was enforced strictly in Tiruchi. With the police conducting intensive checks in 30 places, a majority of two-wheeler riders abided by the rule. However, the police booked a total number of 664 cases against violators and imposed a fine of Rs.100 on each. Beginning the enforcement at 7 a.m., the city police involved the personnel attached to the Law and Order wing also to carry out checks at various points, including Cantonment, Puthur Four Road, Thillai Nagar, Ariyamangalam and Gandhi Market. A senior police official said that an awareness among the two-wheeler riders of wearing helmet was high. Nearly 98 per cent of the two-wheeler riders wore headgears. Most of the offenders were pillion riders, who mostly were women.
Counselling
Not confining to enforcement alone, the traffic police undertook counselling in the later part of the day enlightening the offenders on the rationale behind the Government's directive. A team of traffic police personnel was drafted for the counselling programme to drive home the message of compulsory wearing of helmets. The official said that the counselling sessions were organised at Main Guard Gate, Prabhat Junction, Court and Aristo Roundabout.
