MADURAI: The Election Commission has sought a report from the State Government by June 2 on the action taken with regard to transfer/posting of police and revenue officials in the Madurai West Assembly constituency where a byelection is slated for June 26. In a letter to Chief Secretary, the EC said that no police or civil official associated with the byelection directly or indirectly should be allowed to continue in the constituency if his/her native place happened to be within the Madurai West Assembly segment. While directing that officials who had come to the adverse notice or against whom disciplinary action was recommended for lapses in poll-related work should not be deployed for election duty, the EC ordered the transfer of officials out of the constituency against whom criminal cases were pending in a court of law. Instructions were given to shift officials who had served for more than three years in the constituency during the last four years. The instructions shall be applicable to all police officers from the rank of the Commissioner of Police to police constable and civil officers of the administration having jurisdiction in/over the constituency. Asking the authorities concerned to conduct a review meeting to identify officials who had come under the above categories, the EC directed that such officials might be shifted "immediately."
It should be consulted while posting new persons to the place of present incumbents who stood transferred as per the Commission's policy.
In Madurai city, Additional Director-General of Police and Commissioner A. Subramanian said two Assistant Commissioners of Police who came to the adverse notice of the EC were shifted of the district.
Though the officials, S. Kumaravel and N. Rajendran, were initially moved to CID units in the city, on Friday they were transferred to Sivaganga and Virudhunagar respectively.
