VILLUPURAM: The two-day annual summer festival on the Kalvarayan Hills, about 90 km from here, began on Friday with recitation of devotional hymns by students of the Government Music School. Delivering the inaugural address, Collector Brajendra Navnit unfolded a series of development works. Under the Prime Minister Rural Road Development programme roads will be laid for a distance of 107 km at a cost of Rs.23.68 crore. Mr. Navnit said 49,081 people were residing in the 15 panchayats on the hills, with tribals constituting a majority. These panchayats were being developed in phases under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam. Mr. Navnit said the water sources such as lakes and ponds on the hills would be improved at a cost of Rs 1.26 crore. Through the Rural Job Guarantee Programme over 1.50 lakh mandays would be created. The Collector further said the Forest Department had proposed to construct 20 cluster houses, with each unit costing Rs.37,000, and a sanitary complex at a cost of Rs.1.6 lakh. It would also lay road for a distance of 45 km linking 13 habitations at a cost of Rs.1.71 crore.
