Towards cleaner places of worship, with a smile
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI:
Nearly 50 volunteers from the Selfless Movement Improving Life Everywhere (SMILE), a Chennai-based voluntary organisation, cleaned a temple in Singapore last week.
From removing shrubs and cleaning of garden area to cleaning of vessels and pooja articles, the team from SMILE did all it could to ensure that the Veera Kaliamman Temple was spic and span. SMILE founder C.N. Paramasivan said the activity marked the organisation's first voluntary temple cleaning activity outside India.
"Our volunteers have cleaned over 350 places of worship in Tamil Nadu. We are happy that temples outside India have recognised our motto and encouraged us," he said.
During last year, SMILE volunteers cleaned up several places of worship, including temples in Srirangam, Thiruvanaikaval, Samayapuram, Navagraha temples around Kumbakonam and Meenakshi Amman, Azhagar and Tiruparankundram temples in Madurai.
