NEW DELHI: Expressing concern over the violence in Rajasthan, former Prime Minister, V.P. Singh on Friday said that urgent efforts should be made by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje to resolve the issue failing which she should resign. "The BJP should take immediate steps to address the situation or the Chief Minister should put in her papers," Mr. Singh told newsmen here. He said the incidents in Rajasthan and the subsequent violence that led to loss of innocent lives and property were a matter of deep concern and it was time that the issue was resolved to the satisfaction of all. He said he was not in favour of imposition of President's rule and had always opposed it except during the demolition of the Babri Masjid and against the Mulayam Singh Government as he felt that free and fair elections were not possible under the Samajwadi Party regime.
Swamy's demand
Chennai Special Correspondent writes: Instead of violently agitating for Scheduled Tribe status for their community, Gujjar leaders should take up the matter with the local MPs and the UPA Government, Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy said on Friday. He said the manner of the agitation and its spread from Rajasthan to other States clearly "points [to] a Central hand behind the agitation against the Rajasthan Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje." Instead of launching a violent agitation, the Gujjar leaders should request their representatives in Parliament and the Union Government to get a government order issued with regard to their demand.
