New Delhi: With elections in Gujarat round the corner, Congress president Sonia Gandhi stepped up the attack on the Narendra Modi Government accusing it of showing "disregard for human rights" and "targeting" minorities in fake encounters. "This month, the nation witnessed the shocking exposure of how certain officers of the Gujarat police took the law into their own hands and carried out extra-judicial killings," Ms. Gandhi said in a `Letter to Congress Workers' in the latest issue of Congress Sandesh, party mouthpiece. "The present Gujarat Government has once again revealed its disregard for human rights," especially by "targeting" the minority community. In an apparent reference to the attack on an art exhibition in Vadodara by suspected Bharatiya Janata Party and Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists, Ms. Gandhi said the "intolerant attitude of the BJP against the autonomy of universities and the freedom of expression" went against the spirit of democracy. Condemning the "attempt to create communal tensions," she said the Congress would continue to demand that those found guilty be brought to justice. PTI
