Delimitation exercise stumps few MLAs

Special Correspondent

Number of constituencies in city goes up from 13 to 15

  • Exercise influenced by ruling party, says BJP MLA Kishan Reddy
  • Eight new constituencies in Ranga Reddy district

HYDERABAD: It is official now. The number of constituencies in Hyderabad district has gone up from 13 to 15 while those in Ranga Reddy more than doubled from six to 14 with the completion of delimitation of Assembly Constituencies.

But the exercise taken up by the Delimitation Commission of India to reorganise the Assembly constituencies based on demographic changes and geographic contiguity has taken quite a few MLAs by surprise

Some existing constituencies in city would be a thing of the past in the 2009 elections like Maharajgunj, Asifnagar, and Himayatnagar while new ones Amberpet, Bahadurpura, Jubilee Hills, Nampally, Goshamahal would be in picture.

BJP legislator from Himayatnagar constituency G. Kishan Reddy told The Hindu from Singapore that he is unhappy with the decision to do away his constituency. "I represented my views to the Commission. They said one thing and did something else. I was kept in the dark regarding final decision about my constituency. It is illegal and the decision seems totally influenced by the ruling party ," he said.

He felt that the re-organisation would affect the developmental activity in the constituencies with two more years to go for elections.

    `Brothers' happy

The political system was such those areas that would not be part of a constituency could be neglected and there could be diversion of funds to the newly inducted areas.

Interestingly while there was rampant speculation that Sanathnagar and Khairatabad constituencies represented by `the Hyderabad brothers' would even lose their names, they remain. While Sanathnagar represented by Marri Shashidhar Reddy has its jurisdiction intact except for minor changes, Khairatabad represented by P. Janardhan Reddy was reorganised paving way for Jubilee Hills, Kukatpally and Serilingampally constituencies.

Mr. Shashidhar Reddy is a happy man as his constituency was not divided into four segments as rumoured. After he aired his views in a public hearing, Sanathnagar remained but for minor changes. .

    P. Janardhan Reddy said he had no complaints as delimitation concept was a good one and it would be better to have more MLAs to serve the areas better. "Delimitation would not affect my electoral prospects as all the segments are equal to me", Mr.Reddy said.
