Police custody for human trafficking case accused

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Travel agent Mohammad Rasheed, whose name had cropped up during investigations into the human trafficking case involving Member of Parliament Babubhai Katara, was remanded to seven-day police custody by a Delhi court here on Friday. The Delhi police had brought Rasheed on transit remand from Hyderabad where the accused had surrendered before a court there on May 3.

Producing Rasheed before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Kamini Lau, the police sought his custody for preliminary interrogation for nearly 30 minutes. The court granted the same. Subsequently the police produced Rasheed again and sought further custody.

The police told the court that Rasheed had been in touch with Sunder Lal Yadav, a travel agent accused in the case, in the past. They had together managed to send abroad a woman and two minors from Gujarat.

Wanted money back

However, in one case Sunder Lal was to send a woman abroad with alleged help from MP Mohammad Tahir Khan, whose name has earlier come up during investigations. But, he could not arrange the visa. Rasheed, who had given Rs. 1.25 lakhs to Sunder Lal for the purpose, wanted his money back, the police said.

However, the police told the court that Rasheed had not been in touch with Sunder Lal in the past one year. It told the court earlier that Rasheed was introduced to Sunder Lal through the personal assistant of an MP from Andhra Pradesh. The police also told the court that Rasheed had named two travel agents Shakeel and Raju Kitty, whose arrests could unearth a bigger racket. Meanwhile, Katara moved his bail plea before the ACMM.
