`My head is a boom box!'

Anand Parthasarathy

In-ear headphones marry technology to human physiology

— By Special Arrangement

Bose in-ear.

BANGALORE: The lowly earphones — often used and thrown away — have suddenly become the target of cutting edge technology. Bose, the maker of arguably the best sound delivery systems in the world, has seemingly decided that after creating the iconic QuietComfort noise reduction headphones for "over the ear" and "on ear" use, it's time to move on "in ear" systems.

The recently released Bose in-ear phones bring the same acoustic technology that made the bigger phones famous. With a choice of three sizes of silicone ear buds, the phones sit snugly on the `concha' or the natural bowl of the ear — and don't have to be jammed in to sit tight.

Attention to detail

Once in place — you can relax — they won't fall off even if you are jogging. But you might be pardoned for feeling your entire head is one big boom box — the acoustics (with a good sound track of course) sound as if your two ears are part of the auditorium speaker system.

It's a bit unsettling to start with — but hardcore music lovers will appreciate the attention to detail. Will they like to pay Rs. 5,000 for a pair? There must be enough who do, for, Bose to lavish all this attention on the tiniest member of its catalogue.
