CHENNAI : Avadi Municipality proposes to construct medians and provide streetlights on a 15-km stretch of the Chennai-Tiruvallur High Road in order to reduce road accidents. The local body is awaiting permission from the Highways Department to illuminate the stretch from Ivan Stedford Hospital in Ambattur to Nemilicheri at a cost of Rs.3 crore. An official of the municipality said the resolution on the facilities was passed recently at the council meeting. It followed complaints of accidents on the road owing to poor lighting. The project is expected to be completed in a year, he said. The municipality also proposed to take up road works shortly. Several roads in low-lying areas in 48 wards, including Tirumullaivoyal and Annanur, would be cemented. Bids have been invited by the civic body to blacktop or cement about 100 roads in Avadi. The project, costing Rs.10 crore, would be completed in about three months, the official said. "Simultaneously, we are planning to repair and construct stormwater drains wherever required," he added. The municipality is also gearing up to supply drinking water through pipeline with Chennai Metrowater as the nodal agency. At present, water is being distributed through street taps and tankers. Metrowater supplies about 1.30 million litres of water daily to the local body. An official of the Municipality said the project worth Rs.87.57 crore would provide water connections to about 50,000 households. It is estimated to cover a population of 2.80 lakh. The civic body would bear 50 per cent of the project cost, while the rest would be met through a grant from the State Government and funding under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. Sixteen locations in Avadi have been identified for construction of underground sumps and overhead tanks, the official said. Metrowater would float tenders for the project.
