Blood donors to be honoured

Awards will be given away to regular donors and motivators on June 14, World Blood Donors Day

As part of World Blood Donors Day on June 14, Terumo Penpol Ltd. in association with Club 25 units is planning to honour individuals and institutions who have made remarkable contributions to blood donation.

Awards will be given away for the best blood donor of the year, donors who have donated more than 10 times, donor motivators, including women, Club 25 Units and organisations supporting promotion of voluntary blood donation.

Blood donation camps for women will be held in June at All Saints College, NSS College for Women and Government Women's College. The best women donor of the year will be rewarded.

Talk shows

The Blood Line Journal (A journal for promoting VBD) will be dedicated to repeat regular donors and blood donor motivators.

Talk shows will be arranged for blood donors, motivators and blood transfusion officers on television channels.

`Thank You Blood Donor' greeting card design contest for schoolchildren and college students, distribution of VBD leaflets through petrol pumps, donor 's meeting and quiz for donors will also be organised.

Volunteers will distribute educational brochures and pamphlets for promotion of blood donation.

Thank you messages for blood donors on inflated balloons, thank you letters to best donors, blood donation camps, awareness campaigns to spread the message of VBD, distribution of posters and leaflets to colleges and schools and use of mass media such as newspapers, periodicals, radio and TV to promote VBD are the other activities to be taken up.

`Mobile' role

A school education program on VBD will be conducted in June along with group identification camps at colleges and residential colonies. VBD messages will be scrolled on display boards as well as through mobile phones and landlines.

The function to honour regular blood donors will be held on June 14 at Vylopally Samskrithi Bhavan, Nanthencode, Thiruvananthapuram.

Mary Mettilda representing All Saints College, Krishnakumar of TCS and Byju V Moni, Nellimood, have been selected the best three motivators in the College, Industry and NGO categories respectively.

All Saints College, Thiruvananthapuram; Government College, Kanjiramkulam; and the Mohandas College of Engineering, Nedumangad; are the best Club 25 units.

Flexi Containers, Attingal; J.N. Freight, Kochi; and Nice Chemicals, Kochi; have been selected as the best companies supporting promotion of voluntary blood donation.

Anita Kumari, Kerala Mahila Samakhiya Society; Suma, housewife, Pirippankodu; and Sujitha, All Saints College; are the three best women donor motivators while the Best Male Donor of the year award will be given to Byju S Mony, Bhama Electricals,Nellimood.

Token of thanks

World Blood Donor Day is an annual event organised to express gratitude to millions of people worldwide who donate blood on a voluntary unpaid basis making blood transfusion possible, and to encourage current and potential donors for regular voluntary blood donation.

The international theme of this year's World Blood Donor Day `Safe Blood for Safe Motherhood' is to highlight how voluntary blood donors can help save the lives of thousands of mothers and newborns around the world.
