THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will inaugurate the State-level Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Scheme in the Udumbanchola panchayat maidan in Idukki on Sunday. Electricity Minister A.K. Balan will preside and Francis George, MP, will deliver the keynote address. Work costing Rs.438.36 crore will be undertaken in the State as part of the scheme. About 90 per cent of the amount will come as grant and the rest as loan. Electrification of the villages is the objective of the scheme. The State has already achieved it but all the houses are not electrified. When the scheme is completed, all the houses will become electrified. Power connection will be provided free-of-cost to those below the poverty line. Some two lakh families in 3,578 `karas' are expected to benefit from the scheme.
