Undertrial murdered on court premises

TUTICORIN: An undertrial was murdered on the district court premises here on Saturday.

The police said P. Sankarapandi (25) of Melakaranthai had developed enmity with Gurusamy of the same area. On December 7, 2004, he allegedly murdered Gurusamy's mother, wife, daughter and his relative.

Sankarapandi was arrested and lodged at Palayamkottai Central Prison. When he was brought to Fast Track Court I along with another undertrial, Gurusamy allegedly hacked Sankarapandi to death.

Head constable Easwaramurthy, who was escorting the undertrials, in an attempt to save Sankarapandi, lost four fingers of his left hand. Gurusamy was arrested. — Staff Reporter

PMK plans State-wide agitation on June 5

CHENNAI: The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) will organise State-wide demonstrations before the offices of the Chief Educational Officer and District Educational Officer on June 5, urging the Government to issue an order allotting 15 per cent of the seats to poor students in all private educational institutions in the State.

In a statement here on Friday, PMK president G.K. Mani said the Government should take stringent action against private institutions, which were charging more than the fees prescribed by the Government. — Special Correspondent

MDMK to boycott cooperative polls

CHENNAI: The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) on Saturday decided to boycott elections to cooperative societies.

In a statement here, MDMK general secretary Vaiko accused the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government of trying to indulge in irregularities in the elections.

They should be held in a free and fair manner through an exclusive commission for cooperative bodies, he said. — Special Correspondent

Application forms for lateral admission

CHENNAI: Application forms for admission to second year B.E/B.Tech courses in government, government-aided and self-financing engineering colleges under the Directorate of Technical Education for academic year 2007-08 will be issued from June 5 to 18 in select engineering/polytechnic colleges.

The last date for receipt of filled-in applications is June 18 for diploma candidates and July 3 for B.Sc degree candidates. — Special Correspondent

Two held for stealing copper wire

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel have arrested two persons on charges of stealing copper wire used in the railway signal system and two others on charges of buying the stolen property on Saturday.

In the raids on Friday and Saturday, RPF Inspector N. Keshavadoss and Sub-Inspector V.T. Dillip caught red-handed Mayilsamy (27) of Mettur in Salem and Sathyaraj (23) of CMC Colony with 10 kg of copper wire.

After interrogation, the RPF teams raided two shops at Marakkadai and at Ukkadam and arrested Velusamy (61) and Ismail (46) on charges of trading with stolen property.

All the four persons have been remanded to judicial custody. — Staff Reporter

Fire destroys municipal grass farm

PUDUKOTTAI: A major fire at the municipal farm here destroyed about three acres of grass and a few trees around the fence. Fanned by winds, the flames destroyed about three acres of grass. Fire fighting units from Pudukottai and the SIPCOT Complex fought for five hours and brought the fire under control. The Ganesh Nagar police have registered a case of accidental fire and are investigating.

Three children drown in well

PERAMBALUR: Three children, including brother and sister, drowned in a well at Arunagiripalayam near Kunnam on Friday. Police identified the victims as S. Jayakodi (12), C. Selvi (11) and her brother C. Senthil (8).

The children were taking bath in the well when the tragedy occurred, police said. The Kunnam police have registered a case.

Free TV sets distributed

THANJAVUR: The Union Minister of State for Finance, S.S. Palanimanickam, distributed free colour television sets to the residents of Kadakadappai panchayat on Saturday. He called upon the educated youths in the village to involve themselves in social service and said that they could run night schools to spread education.

The Minister distributed 332 colour TVs to the beneficiaries. The Chairman, Thanjavur Panchayat Union, P. Dorairaj, the president of the Kadakadappai village panchayat, S. Xavier, also spoke.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 74.21 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Saturday. The inflow was 901 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 1,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Last date extended

DINDIGUL: Gandhigram Rural University has extended the last date for issue of application for all the programmes, except MCA and M. Sc (IT), up to June 5, according to a release from the university here on Saturday.

Awareness programme

MADURAI: An awareness programme on the ill-effects of addiction to tobacco and drugs was conducted on Thursday at the Railway Junction here by Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya.

Water level

MADURAI: Water level in the Periyar dam stood at 108.4 feet (full level 136 feet) with no inflow or discharge. The level in Vaigai dam stood at 26.08 feet (71feet) with no inflow and a discharge of 41 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 626 mcft. — Staff Reporter

Collector's appeal

ERODE: Collector T. Udhaychandran has asked two-wheeler riders to wear helmets. In a release, he stated that helmets with ISI mark were being sold at the Chinthamani cooperative super market at nominal cost. He asked the public to buy only the ISI certified helmets. Those violating the Government Order would be fined Rs. 100 for the first time and Rs. 300 for the second time from July 1.

TNEB announcement

ERODE: Executive Engineer, TNEB, Perundurai, R. Thangavel said that due to administrative reasons, meter reading in Mettupalayam, Thottipalayam and Kuttapalayam in Vellode area, Erode electricity distribution circle, for April-May had not been taken. So the consumers should remit the electricity charges for the previous month for this period too. The payment could be made till June 15, a release on Saturday said.

ERODE: R. Jay Vignesh, a student of Bharathi Vidhalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Gobichettipalayam, has secured 1018 out of 1100 in the Class X matriculation examinations. Principal and correspondent P.R. Velumani hounoured him. Mr. Velumani said that all the 15 students appeared for the examinations secured first class.

ERODE: Department of Mechatronics of the Kongu Engineering College, Perundurai, conducted a seminar on `Eco-friendly, Energy-efficient Technologies in Casting and Welding.' The seminar, sponsored by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, was inaugurated by Dr. V. Balasubramanian, professor, Manufacturing, Annamalai University.

He said the need for developing eco-friendly technologies was imperative given the last two years' growth in the State. He emphasised on energy efficient production to reduce manufacturing cost. - Staff Reporter
