CUDDALORE:
Six Sri Lankan fishermen were handed over to M.H.M. Meheraj, Attache, Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission, Chennai, here on Saturday.
Their repatriation to their native places such as Trincomalee and Matra would take another week as their boat ought to be set right and other official formalities completed. Until then, they would be under the care of the Alliance for the Release of Innocent Fishermen, a non-governmental organisation recognised by both Indian and Sri Lankan Governments.
Collector Rajendra Ratnootold reporters that on April 2 the fishermen were found drifting in their failed mechanised vessel Kaveesa Putha off the Cuddalore coast. Fishermen from Thevanampattinam brought them ashore. As the fishermen violated the Indian Maritime Zone Act and lacked valid visa, they were detained in Puzhal prison for two months.
Based on the report of the joint interrogation committee that found them innocent, the State Government ordered their release.
