BANGALORE: Delhi's Ajay Singh for his 17.47m effort in shot put and Karnataka girl M.R. Poovamma (54.7 seconds in the 400) were adjudged best boy and girl athlete of the Unitech fourth National Youth athletics championship, which concluded here at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Saturday. Kerala boys with four gold, four silver and one bronze emerged triumphant while Tamil Nadu annexed the girls honours with five gold, three silver and six bronze. Poovamma added another gold to her kitty with a 24.8s effort to win the girls 200m sprint, besides anchoring Karnataka to the silver in the 4x400m relay.
Fine first heat
In the 200m Poovamma ran a fine first heat in the morning clocking 24.5s but failed to match the effort in the final later in the day. But with hand timing still in use, the timing could not be considered for a record with Sabina Khatun's (WB) mark of 25.27 seconds still holding good. Kerala had an overall tally of eight gold, seven of them coming on Saturday. Tamil Nadu had to settle with just five gold, all from its girls' team. Shivam Singh from Uttar Pradesh flung the discus to a distance of 53.29m to establish a meet record. Shivam's throw was marginally ahead of Pardeep Kumar's (Haryana) mark of 53.00m set in May, 2005. Devender Ramesh Singh continued the tradition of pole-vaulters from Gujarat stealing a march at the National stage. Devender equalled the two-year meet record of 4.10m set by TN's N. Vadivelu.
