Two workers killed as temporary lift crashes in Karaikal

KARAIKAL:
Two workers were killed and two others sustained serious injuries, when the steel wire carrying a temporary lift in which they were taking materials for the construction of an overhead water tank suddenly snapped and crashed on to the ground at T.R. Pattinam near Karaikal on Saturday.
Police sources said that the accident occurred when four construction workers Natarajan (40) of Vallundampattu, Siva (38) of Vilar Road, Thanjavur, Sundararajan (35) of Soorakottai, Thanjavur and Dhanabal (25) of Gandharvakottai in Pudukottai district were going up in the lift to the top of the tank. The lift wire attached to a crane suddenly snapped, and the lift crashed from a height of about 50 ft.
Natarajan and Siva died on way to hospital. Sundarajan and Dhanabal were admitted to the Government hospital in Karaikal
The Public Works Department is engaged in the construction of 10 lakh litre capacity water tank at a cost of Rs.1 crore in T.R. Patttinam.
