Massive drinking water project for Yanam planned

Puducherry: Local Administration and Tourism Minister Malladi Krishna Rao has said that a massive project to meet drinking water requirements of Yanam region will be launched soon. Talking to The Hindu here on Saturday, Mr. Rao said that presently the water tasted brackish in most parts of the region. He said that the water from the Godavari system would be stored and carried to Yanam after treatment.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister had made available 12.87 acres in that State limits to store water. He said that in the first stage the Andhra Pradesh Government had provided a 53-acre site, and now with the requirement having increased, he had additional site allotted to Yanam. A total of 36 acres in Kanakalpetta and Darialdippa would be acquired soon for constructing overhead tanks. He said that Rs.78 crore was available from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) for the project. The Andhra Pradesh Government would provide 30 cusecs of water from Godavari.

He said over the last 11 years, Rs.20 crore had been spent for comprehensive water supply scheme in Yanam region. The present arrangements would ensure that there would be no crisis for another hundred years.

Mr. Rao said that the Union Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh had sanctioned Rs.2.74 crore for developing a playground at an eight-acre site in Navodaya Vidyalaya. The Vidyalaya had registered distinct record of cent per cent pass in the Class X public examination.

He said under students exchange programme 15 students from Yanam had gone over to Bihar to do their school education, and a similar number from Bihar had joined the Navodaya Vidyalaya in Yanam.

Tourist guards

Mr. Rao said that very soon 100 tourist guards would be posted in collaboration with a private security agency in Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam would visit Yanam during this month-end, according the office of the President. Mr. Kalam was earlier expected to visit Yanam during the second week of this June, Mr. Rao added.
